Chapter 20

Huon stared down at the rock.

It covered his chest, his shoulders, his thighs. And it was spreading. Soon, it would cover every inch of him, and he wouldn’t be able to move at all.

At the moment, he could still move his wrist. With his Legend-level strength, he’d managed to keep hold of the Blood Sword, clutched tightly in his right hand. He twisted his wrist, slamming the sword into the rock, hoping to cut through it while being precise enough not to cut through himself.

The sword cracked whatever stone covered his body, but it didn’t give him complete control over his movements.

It was like he’d been covered in clay.

The second he cracked the stone, it stopped spreading. As fast as he was able to, he cracked the rest of it, freeing his limbs one at a time until he was back on his feet. The whole ordeal couldn’t have taken more than twenty seconds, but he knew that was a hell of a long time when in a fight.

He spotted Gale, standing on the outskirts of the fight, glancing from Huon, back at the beast, looking terribly unsure.

Huon waved a hand at him as he began to run. The Knight spotted him, knowing to back away even further.

He couldn’t wait for the boy to advance, to be able to hold his own in fights like this. Though Huon had to wonder what even a Champion would be able to do when up against a beast this strong.

Huon focused once more on the elephant-beast. That unique surge had taken him by surprise—he couldn’t let that happen again. He had grown used to being stronger than the beasts they encountered out here. This wasn’t the first beast they’d come across with Immortal-level surges. His Blood Sword had always been enough to equal the playing field.

He was sure it would be again today, but that just made him realise how much he’d grown to rely on it.

What would happen if he ever lost it?

I won’t let that happen, Huon thought.

Clutching the sword in both hands as he ran, bloodlust thrummed through him. Liona was engaging with the beast once more. She must have been surging barrage. She ducked and weaved under the beast’s swiftly moving trunk, always keeping behind its massive body, slashing it in the back again and again with acute venom imbued into her sword—it must have been the only thing she had that could damage the beast. She wasn’t even bothering to surge any of her elemental essences.

The beast seemed too smart to be distracted by ice-shards that couldn’t even hurt it.

Huon gritted his teeth. He wouldn’t leap into the air this time. He needed to be more nimble.

As he sprinted, he thought about how much essence this beast would have to offer. It should be more than enough to bring Gale up to Champion. The bloodlust thrumming through him rebelled against that idea. Huon was the one that deserved the beast’s essence, not Gale.

He’d grown used to the blade influencing his thoughts in this way, and found it easy enough to push against.
